The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a significant step toward resolving its internal crisis, as factions loyal to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike begin reconciliation talks ahead of the 2027 general elections.
For months, tensions within the party had escalated, spilling into courtrooms, public exchanges, and behind-the-scenes power struggles. The growing rift raised serious concerns about the PDP’s unity and its preparedness for the next electoral cycle. However, under increasing pressure from party stakeholders, both camps are now shifting toward dialogue in a bid to avoid further fragmentation.
Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, factional PDP National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, disclosed that the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), aligned with the Makinde camp, had initiated steps to ease tensions and reopen communication channels. This move followed the intervention of the PDP Board of Trustees, led by Senator Adolphus Wabara.
“In obedience to the advisory of the Court of Appeal, Ibadan, the Board of Trustees constituted a high-powered committee to interface with our estranged party members,” Turaki said.
As a demonstration of goodwill, the NWC postponed key meetings of the National Executive Committee and National Caucus, while also moderating its public rhetoric. However, Turaki noted that the gesture was not immediately reciprocated, citing what he described as the “weaponisation of hurtful rhetoric” and “derogatory statements” from opposing quarters.
Despite this, he confirmed that progress has now been made. “I can unequivocally confirm that, as of today, leaders on both sides have broken the ice and are exploring various pathways towards a lasting resolution,” he stated.
Turaki also appealed to party members and supporters nationwide to exercise restraint, warning that inflammatory remarks or actions could derail the fragile reconciliation process.
Although dialogue is underway, the legal battle between the factions remains unresolved, with multiple cases still pending before various courts, including the Court of Appeal. Nonetheless, the PDP signaled its willingness to abandon litigation if a comprehensive political agreement is reached.
The reconciliation efforts are widely seen as crucial to restoring stability within the party and positioning it as a formidable contender in the 2027 elections. Stakeholders continue to watch developments closely as negotiations progress.
