A former political adviser to President Bola Tinubu, Hakeem Baba Ahmed, has said he hopes the President will not seek a second term in the 2027 general election, arguing that Tinubu has not demonstrated the urgency needed to tackle Nigeria’s pressing challenges.
Baba Ahmed made the remarks while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he said his opinion has remained unchanged since he left the Tinubu administration. He stated that although the President achieved his long standing ambition of becoming Nigeria’s leader, his performance in office has not met the expectations of many Nigerians.
According to Baba Ahmed, the political hunger and sharp instinct that once defined Tinubu’s rise in politics have not reflected in his approach to governance. He said the drive previously associated with the President has not translated into decisive action to fix the country’s problems.
“I wish President Tinubu would not run again in 2027. He achieved his ambition of becoming president. He said Emilokan and he had his turn. But I do not think he has run the country well. The Tinubu we used to know, with all the hunger and brilliant intelligence for scheming, has not shown the same hunger to fix things,” Baba Ahmed said.
He advised the President to consider supporting a younger, healthier and more focused candidate within the All Progressives Congress instead of seeking re election. He added that Tinubu has fulfilled his personal political ambition and should now guide the party toward producing a successor with renewed energy for national leadership.
Although President Tinubu has not officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 election, the APC endorsed him for a second term in May. At the party’s national summit held at the Presidential Villa on May 22, APC governors passed a vote of confidence in the President and adopted a resolution backing him as the party’s flagbearer.
