The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has warned against any attempt to weaken or reverse the electronic transmission of election results ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring the reform non negotiable.
In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the group expressed concern over what it described as growing moves by certain political actors to undermine the full deployment of electronic result transmission.
According to CNG, most irregularities in Nigeria’s elections historically occur during the collation and result aggregation stages, where figures are allegedly altered to distort the will of voters. The coalition argued that electronic transmission serves as a safeguard by ensuring that results transmitted directly from polling units cannot be manipulated by politicians, compromised officials or vested interests.
“We make it clear without hesitation that electronic transmission of election results is essential for credible elections and the final safeguard against electoral fraud,” the statement said.
The group warned that any resistance to the system suggests opposition to transparency and accountability. It specifically raised concerns over recent remarks and legislative actions allegedly linked to the Senate leadership and some members of the National Assembly, which it claimed could weaken the reform.
CNG cautioned that flawed elections risk eroding public trust, triggering post election violence and undermining governmental legitimacy. It urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to remain steadfast in implementing full electronic transmission and called on lawmakers to avoid passing amendments that could dilute transparency.
The coalition also appealed to civil society groups, youth organisations and the media to intensify advocacy efforts. It maintained that credible, technology driven elections are critical to national stability, economic confidence and democratic consolidation ahead of 2027.
