The Nigeria Police Force has clarified that the ₦100 million paid into the personal bank account of Victor Egbetokun, son of the outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, was a banking error that was promptly reversed.
The clarification followed online reports alleging that the funds were traced to the Anambra State Government’s security vote account. Addressing the issue on Politics Today aired on Channels Television, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, dismissed the allegation, insisting there was no wrongdoing.
According to Hundeyin, the transaction was immediately reported by Victor Egbetokun upon noticing the unexpected inflow. He explained that Victor contacted his account officer and ensured the funds were reversed without delay.
“You could remember when he (Omoyele Sowore) said ₦100 million was paid into the account of the son of the IGP. I called the son of the IGP immediately to find out what happened, and he explained,” Hundeyin said.
“He said he saw ₦100 million in his account and instructed that it be reversed immediately, which was done.”
Hundeyin added that Victor printed his bank statement and submitted it to the police to confirm that the money had been returned. He further disclosed that Victor was compelled to close the account and had written a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission requesting a full investigation into the allegation.
The police spokesperson maintained that the incident was purely a banking mistake, stressing that the funds were returned to the originating government account shortly after the error was discovered. He reiterated that no criminality was involved and urged the public to disregard claims suggesting otherwise.
